Place sucks, security always makes up their own rules for what is prohibited in carry-ons even if it is not on their list, anything of value should be checked they’ve burned me twice.

I left my luggage at the TSA in Guatemala. If anybody knows how to contact the TSA there please let me know ASAP. I’m doing my best but I have yet to find a contact that works.

I went to Guatemala in the summer and the weather was great. The airport has all that’s needed so its size does not really matter.

I was in Guatemala for 4 days and I loved it. The airport is small but has what’s needed for an airport.

The airport is going into some upgrades and that is why there are some failures but it’s OK.

I just had a nice tour of Guat. Landmarks : I loved it and there are gentle people. Certainly, the security issue at LaAurora is a bit overbearing, where items usually allowed, are here confiscated. It is unfortunate that I had my trolley (checked-in at LaAurora 3 hrs before flight time) padlocks cut and few minor local mementos stolen. But this could happen at any place as scoundrels are everywhere and they certainly do not represent this beautiful country.
They Steal Everything

I actually live in Guatemala and have recently had a number of very bad experiences with the airport: 1. Flying out with my kids, customs tried to take my children’s crayons. My 4 year old burst into tears and they let us keep them. 2. A friend flew down with things for us and some other friends. Their bags took a very long time to get through customs and upon arrival, a large number of things were missing, including pajamas for my sons, toys and assorted kitchen items. 3. My sister just flew out and had customs remove everything in her carry on. She had candles and bar soap, which is permitted by TSA, but they took it all. I have no doubt that they simply wanted it for themselves. She then found her checked bags destroyed and a lot missing. She was taking alcohol back home and they took many of the bottles, as well as a number of souvenirs. If you encounter any kind of issue, PLEASE complain to the appropriate authorities or this will continue. It is considerably worse than it was even a couple of years ago and that is due to the fact that they get away with it.
Terrible Airport

Terrible airport – they just upgraded the airport but I really hate this airport since my family come to the airport to welcome me but I never found them and that was because the people that come to welcome their family need to wait outside the airport. When I got there it was raining and very cold and a lot of people were outside freezing; it’s ridiculous that people have to wait outside. The security is poor and the airport is like a ghost airport. I really prefer the old airport – every time I visited them and got to the airport, they were inside the airport at a special place for visitors, not outside freezing. I think it was just a scam an excuse to steal money. It looks nice from outside but inside it’s a ghost town, terrible airport.

I find it funny that Americans feel that if a few crochet items that could be used as weapons get taken away they feel hurt. Yet when certain races go through the American Airports you get checked inside out up and down to make sure you don’t have a bomb. I have personally experience being discriminated being Latino even though I was born in Canada. I’ve had nail clippers taken away and even a camera because I didn’t have batteries and could not prove it was a functioning "camera", this all happening in LAX. Guatemala is a beautiful country full of culture. I have encountered rude obnoxious Americans not just at the airport and have never felt that it is something that is to be considered 100% American. There are not so great people everywhere in the world, there are huge lineups at airports and if you don’t want to deal with it, buy a private jet and shut your trap. :)

I was in Guatemala in 09 and 2010 and I saw so much improvement on that airport. It’s a nice and clean airport, nothing like the old one, very modern airport. Everything went smooth; good security personnel inside and out looking forward to return this year.

I had the experience of first visiting La Aurora airport before the recent expansion and then after. I think the airport has been vastly improved. The security seems comparable, if not better, than the TSA. Everyone I encountered during my visit through the airport were courteous and respectful. As a guest in their country, I was always made to feel welcome and look forward to return visits.

Airport security in Guatemala is what it is, because the USA has made so many enemies in the world, that now everyone is forced to provide security for flights into the USA, lest someone decides to do harm to you guys. Have you ever heard of the "Ugly American"? You paint with a wide brush, and decided that because someone kept your precious knitting hooks, the guy is a thief. The TSA is well documented for having people in their midst, stealing from suitcases. Same has been true for airport workers throughout the USA. No one calls all the people in the USA thieves or crooked because of this. People understand that there are a few individuals causing problems and not a whole nation. You do not want to go back to Guatemala? Fine. Stay home. Stop spreading your ignorance and your bad American behaviour. Plenty of people visit third world countries, and have the education and cultural awareness to know that things are not like in the USA – where anyway, they are not as good as you people seem to believe they are.
Not A Friendly Airport

As a frequent business traveller, I have been over 100 countries. I did not have good experience with this airport. staff was rude and there was much line in security checking. The airport reflects how Guatemala is run poorly. if i were you, i would try to go to another country for vacation. They seem they don’t need American dollars. Then, leave them without tourist’s dollars.
Airport Security Is A Crock

We as a large group were flying out of Guatemala yesterday. My friend got through the security fine, she had crochet items also. Legal scissors, the kindergarten type. They stopped me for the same things. They wanted to take the scissors, I did not care about that, because they were dollar store scissors. Then they said they would have to take all of my crochet hooks, my friend is long gone and at the gate waiting for me. I said that they cost too much for them to toss out. So they said I had to go back and check the bag in.. So I stood in line for 30 minutes waiting to check another bag in. I nearly missed my flight. My bag went to LA and not to Miami. So I am now trying to find that bag, thanks to the rude, and I do believe thieves at the Guatemala airport. If one person can take crochet hooks through the airport security, then I should have been able to also. I guess it depends on which line you go through, and the person that wants the items in the bag or not. This experience has left a severe bad taste in my mouth about Guatemala, and its citizens. Perhaps the citizens in Guatemala should have the airport security more scrutinized, so more U.S. citizens will not leave there never wanting to go back. And word of mouth gets around. I will be telling everyone I know about the airport thieves. They will in turn spread that around. When a country decides the security officers can take anything they please, then the country will have to accept that many, many people will choose not to go there. Everything I had in my bag, was TSA legal. It got through 7 other airport securities, around the world, with no problems, just some security officers wanted my hooks, patterns, items I had crocheted, and were trying their hardest to get them. If you do not want to be a nation that has a reputation of being thieves, then my suggestion would be, to make sure the airport security officers are in line with the rest of the worlds TSA requirements, and not their own personal choices.
Security Checkpoint

I also had an unpleasant experience at the security checkpoint before leaving on a Delta flight back to Los Angeles. Up to that point, we had been allowed through all the checks with an iron cross that we had bought. At this last checkpoint, the guard decided that we could not take this item on board with us. After some debating, my husband followed the guard back out to where we checked our bags. He had left the rest of his items in the bin, so I retrieved them, but forgot all about a messenger bag I was carrying. After I boarded the plane I realized that I didn’t have it with me. They wouldn’t let me out of the plane to get it. The best I could do was to tell Delta about it when we landed. They said that since it was a carry-on item, there was not a good chance that I could get it back. I know that there must be a way that I could call the security company at the airport in Guatemala, but haven’t been able to find it.

I was reading the comment from the person who had a pair of cuticle scissors stolen and can only say that we in Guatemala do not need that kind of people ignorant and stupid. We have like any other country problems at the airport, but it doesn’t mean we are all thieves. Are you people in the USA all drug dealers or prostitutes? I don’t think so. I can only see the racism and stupidity in your comments. Thank GOD you’re a minority in the USA. Read a little bit of history about our country and you’ll find out who’s been causing the problems here since 1954. please stay out of our beautiful country.

I went though GUA twice in June of 2009, just passing through on my way from the US to Panama. I’ve never been to Guatemala and after visiting this airport, I will never ever return. My problem isn’t the airport itself, the Guatemalan people, or even most of the workers in the airport. My problem is with the so-called security guards or what they should be known as – thieves! Even though we had already been through security in Panama or the US and even though we were only there for a connecting flight, we had to go through a security checkpoint! What it really should be called is a lets-look-through-your-stuff-without-gloves-to-see-if-you-have-anything-we-can-steal. The first time we went through, they stole my cuticle scissors. Sure cuticle scissors are pointy but since they’re less than four inches, they’ve been allowed now for quite a few years now. But without rhyme or reason, they took them. When I was flying back, I was curious as to what the regulations were in Guatemala since I couldn’t find anything on the internet. I asked and it turns out, there are no rules!!!! It’s up to the discretion of the security guard. What that means is they can STEAL what ever they want. So if you can’t avoid Guatemala (which I highly recommend) don’t take anything of value in your checked bag!

I travelled to Guatemala in January 2009 after waiting so many years that somebody will do something – finally they did! I’m grateful that, in my opinion, Guatemala has one of the best airports in Latin America.
No Facilities For The Disabled

This airport is in the process of being upgraded, but the process of where to pay departure taxes etc. is poor. Also, there are no facilities for the disabled. Imagine having to climb a staircase to access the departure gates.
